Michigan Lawmakers Push for Vaccine Freedom Legislation to Protect Individual Rights

Two Michigan politicians, State Representatives James DeSana and Brad Paquette, have collaborated with Michigan Vaccine Choice (MVC), as discussed in a recent press release. The two have proposed drafting a law to ensure vaccination-related freedom. They selected the capital in Lansing of Michigan, for this public and in-depth presentation, and they named it “vaccine freedom legislation,” a move they think is the regulation of individual rights and the granting of freedom to parents.

DeSana and Paquette disclosed the key purpose of the proposal, according to which the bill is constructed to ensure the non-exclusion (based on their vaccination status) of any Michigan resident. Whether it’s in the workplace, at school, or when trying to access public services, the law’s primary function is the breaking down of the artificial divisions that could arise as a result of the decision to vaccinate or not to vaccinate.

The law says that a job applicant, a student, or any member of the public must not be discriminated against by a company, a school, or the government based on their vaccination status. On the other hand, young people who strive to work have to be treated in a manner no different than adults, like in schools their right for getting education.

The legislative initiatives come in the midst of a larger-scale public debate about freedom of choice in medicine, particularly in the light of recent pandemic regulations. Those in favor of the bill argue that the provision is justified to protect statutory privileges. However, the opponents note that it may result in the failure of the public health system.

Regardless, DeSana and Paquette are of the opinion that the time to discuss the matter has arrived. Referring to the press release, DeSana stated, “Nobody should be treated unequally because of his/her health choices. This bill is primarily about giving everyone a fair chance, freedom, and most importantly, it is respecting the decision made by Michigan families.”

If the bill progresses, it is projected that it will set off a wave of further discussions, crossing the entire range of political beliefs, and setting them off against each other, along the way questioning how best to protect personal rights without being at the cost of achieving public health goals in a post-pandemic world.
