Israeli Military Recovers Body of Thai Hostage from Gaza
There was a sad turn of events at the weekend when the Israeli military declared that the deceased body of Nattapong Pinta, a Thai national who had been hostage during the Hamas-led attack on Israel in October 2023, had been recovered.
As announced by the Israeli Defence Minister Israel Katz, the operation happened in a special military mission in the Rafah area of southern Gaza, where Pinta’s body had been found and returned. The 35-year-old Thai, who was a farmer, was located and brought back to the family at Kibbutz Nir Oz in the Gaza border area. He had left his wife and young son in Thailand with his work money. However, he was abducted by a militant group called the Mujahideen Brigades.
According to the military, it is thought that Pinta passed away in the first few months of his captivity, but the security situation of the missing person had not been confirmed until a recent mission.
His tragic death is the same story as it was that of two Israeli-Americans whose bodies were saved from Gaza just a few days ago. Israel’s defense forces said the intelligence that led to finding Pinta was from the interrogation of a captured militant.
The Hostages and Missing Families Forum, an entity that advocates for the return of captives, issued a statement where they expressed their understanding of the “20 terrible anguishing months of devastating uncertainty” that the family of Pinta went through. In the statement, they also reiterated their demands for the Israeli government to give in to Hamas’s calls to make sure all the other deputies are freed.
It is believed that Pinta is the last hostage of Thai nationals from the October 7 attack. Earlier this year, while there was a ceasefire, five other Thai nationals emerged. They were all found alive.
At the same time, people in southern Gaza are very angry. On Saturday, six Palestinians died and several more were injured after they were shot by Israeli soldiers at a U.S.-sponsored aid distribution center. Warning shots were fired by the IDF towards the people who were deemed menacing. The situation in the area around the aid center was extremely confused, and in the last few days, dozens were slaughtered and hundreds were injured there.
The non-profit organization, the Gaza Humanitarian Foundation, that runs the place has chosen to take a break from their work for a short while to make sure that the situation doesn’t get out of hand and cope with the overcrowding.
The military operation of Israel in Gaza has now lasted nearly two years, and it was caused by the October 2023 incident where the Israeli death toll was as high as 1200 and 251 people were taken hostage. 54 hostages are still in captivity and the Israeli military suspects that at least 31 of them are already dead. Since the beginning of the conflict, more than 54,000 people died in the territory according to the ministry of health in Gaza.
In the meantime, while the rescue mission for the hostages is underway and aid is being delivered to those in need, the story of Pinta is a stark reminder that there are countless personal tragedies that are closely associated with this long and devastating war.
