Carl Henderson Named as Victim in Errigal Mountain Tragedy

There was a weekend tragedy on Errigal Mountain, County Donegal, when a walker who died after collapsing on a walk was named as father-of-three Carl Henderson of Moira, County Down.

Mr. Henderson, aged in his 40s, was climbing one of the area’s best walks – the top when he had a cardiac arrest. Paramedics on a stroll in the area were quick to respond, the Donegal Mountain Rescue Team stated, and attempted to revive him on the mountain.

Despite their best endeavors and rapid deployment of additional emergency medical staff, Mr. Henderson was then flown by a Coast Guard helicopter to Letterkenny University Hospital. Sadly, he was pronounced dead on arrival.

The mountain rescue team and the ambulance services were requested on Saturday afternoon and officially dispatched at 12:48pm. Ground-based volunteer rescuers were in contact from the Errigal car park with rescuers already based at the mountain trying to perform CPR.

It is being treated as a medical emergency and Gardaí have stated that the local coroner has been notified. A post-mortem will be performed to determine how he died.

As a gesture of respect for Carl Henderson, there will be a funeral at the foot of Errigal Mountain at 4:00pm on Monday, and family and fellow trekkers are invited to go and pay their respects to his life.

Donegal County’s highest summit, Errigal, attracts nature enthusiasts and adventurers every season of the year. This unfortunate tragedy has shrouded the surrounding community and all the regular climbers who climb to the world-renowned summit.
