Navy Sailor Missing From Virginia Barracks Found Dead in Norfolk Woods

A tragic twist of the events took place in the case of the 21-year-old Navy sailor Angelina Petra Resendiz, who disappeared without a trace a few weeks ago. Last Tuesday, it became known that the lifeless body of the young sailor was found on June 10 in a forested area in Norfolk, Virginia. The Navy community and those far beyond the search effort had an unfortunate ending.

Resendiz, who grew up in Texas, was governing a kitchen on the USS James E. Williams. She was supposed to be at her barracks on May 29, according to the information that family and friends knew but she never made it back, and her disappearance caused a series of events that were not met initially with the urgency one would have hoped for. A “critically missing adult” alert was issued, in concurrence with the Naval Criminal Investigative Service (NCIS), five days later, on June 3, through Virginia State Police.

The Norfolk medical examiner officially confirmed the body found was Resendiz’s on June 11.

Suspect in Custody as Questions Mount

Meanwhile, as the investigation continues, NCIS has disclosed that another U.S. Navy member is currently being held before the trial in connection to the death of Resendiz but has not been charged yet. Such charges once sustained would be through the Uniform Code of Military Justice (UCMJ), which deals with the accountability of military personnel with crimes.

There might be no information disclosed about the reasons of the tragic event but it would appear that a co-military person might be involved which has rekindled the demand that the military justice system should be reformed and more transparent.

“NCIS remains committed to uncovering the facts surrounding the tragic death of Seaman Resendiz to ensure accountability and justice,” the agency said, in a release, stressing that they have been working together with local and federal law enforcement from the point of starting the investigation.

Family Grieving The Loss of Their Loved One is Now Advocating for Justice

A touching comment reported by Esmeralda Castle, Angelina’s mother, really made it clear to all and sundry the extent of the pain her family feels and their desire to have justice settled.

“We are so devastated that we cannot even find words but we are committed to ensure that nobody will overlook the grave suffering of our dear Angelina,” Castle said.

Esmeralda Castle’s bereavement includes not only sadness but also claims of being angry. She and her family remember the entrance of Navy and the declaration that it was “muted and ambiguous” on arrival. According to the GoFundMe page set up to raise money for the family, Castle reports that she was in the dark at the initial stage of her daughter losing herself, controlled by media news and informal means rather than getting the right information through military channels.

The fundraiser, which on June 11 has drawn in over $10,000, is devoid of a critique of the search, openly accusing the police of negligence in that regard. The statement that NCIS had lost several opportunities for providing further information about the search mission and was unable to make more extensive utilization of the vast Navy resources to locate Resendiz fast is also a part of the records of the search.

“With the military having the use of all these technologies, no sailor should disappear and remain missing for such a long time. This is outrageous that a soldier is lost and none of the equipment is used to track them down,” the campaign reads.

Directing The Call to The Most Powerful Persons

Castle was not stopped by a base barrier and took her cause to the members of Congress, the senators, and even the President to Medium herself with the situation the woman believes to be a delay and failure to handle their own charges as so many servicewomen go missing without proper attention and protection.

As per her description of the situation, the lack of a fast-assured response of care and compassion by the government officials served as a significant factor that probably influenced her daughter’s death event.

“Angelina’s friends were aware she by no means was among them, she was missing, and even her commanders knew she was missing. But the response was a minimal,” Castle commented. “We can’t let this indiffеrence take place. We demand а reform—for our daughters, our sisters, and every woman who wears the uniform.”

Justice, Accountability, and Reform

While the inquiry progresses, it is evident that accountability is at the center of the agenda—not just in the case of the person at fault, but the institutions as well which may have not provided sufficient assistance to Resendiz.

The Navy, NCIS, and other military leaders are under growing pressure to explain how a sailor could vanish from a secure base and go undiscovered for nearly two weeks. Questions are swirling about the speed and seriousness of the search, internal communication breakdowns, and whether sexism or systemic neglect played a role in the delayed response.

Angelina Petra Resendiz was far more than a sailor—she was a daughter, a friend, and a bright young woman whose life was cut short far too soon. Now, her family’s grief has become a driving force in a broader demand for justice, not just for Angelina but for every woman serving in uniform.

Her mother’s final message is unwavering:

“We will not be silent. We will not be ignored. For Angelina—and for every family suffering in silence—justice must be served.”
