Washburn family seriously injured in weekend crash

According to a Missouri State Highway Patrol Crash Report investigated by MSGT. C.C. Clark, on June 15, 2024, at approximately 3:25 p.m., a northbound 2001 Dodge Ram 1500, driven by a male juvenile, 17, of Diamond, attempted to pass another vehicle while going into a curve on Route D, one mile north of Stella, in Newton County, when he observed a southbound 2017 Dodge Grand Caravan, driven by Kelly Sweeney, of Washburn, and steered left in an attempt to avoid a collision. Sweeney steered to the right. Both vehicles travelled off the west side of the roadway, and collided head on.
The male juvenile received moderate injuries. Hope Harris, 18, of Granby, occupant with the male juvenile, received serious injuries. It is unknown if either were wearing safety devices. Both were transported to Freeman West Hospital in Joplin.
Sweeney received serious injuries in the collision and was transported to Mercy Hospital in Springfield. Three juvenile occupants with Sweeney, ages infant, two, and ten received minor injuries and were transported to Freeman Hospital in Joplin. Two other occupants with Sweeney, Lisa Hendrix, 60, and Richard Hendrix, 64, both of Washburn, received serious injuries. Lisa was transported to Freeman West Hospital in Joplin and Richard was transported to Mercy Hospital in Joplin.
Both vehicles were totaled in the crash and transported by Metro Towing of Neosho. TPR M.W. Coleman and SGT M.A. Goodson assisted with the crash.
